Freespirited and alternative coastal tented wedding reception on Shelter Island. Featuring artistic food presentations and impressive guest experience by Peter Callahan Catering. Filled with modern anti bride style and wedding photography with a fine art documentary flair.

A few favorites above…now onto the full experience of the day.
Chiara and Leland held their wedding ceremony and reception in multiple events. First, they celebrated their marriage through a beautiful ceremony in Italy where her family is from. Later in the summer, while back in the states, they held an incredible reception at Leland’s family property on Shelter Island near the Hamptons. Its always a fun little treat taking the ferry out there- but heading out there for this funky fete was unforgettable. XO, Michelle

It was a beautiful late summer day. People were enjoying their sailboats and some clouds helped keep the day cool.
Upon arriving at the house and getting a lay of their beautiful grounds, Chiara ran up the stairs with her “baby” to start getting ready for the festivities. The excitement was palpable!

Before guests arrived, we walked down the street to the docks where Leland played at since he was a child

I cannot express how much I adored Chiara’s chinoiserie-inspired stork-patterned slip gown. I told her I needed to buy one for myself since it matches my home decor. She said she could tell that from looking through my work and she knew they would vibe with me. So true!!!

I can only hope that the photos do justice to how fun these mini burgers and coca-cola’s were (which were drinkable by the way!) The newlyweds really value the culinary arts and wanted to provide an exceptional experience to their guests.

Party Time in the Reception Tent!

As if that sweet cake wasn’t enough, a surprise “Affogato Course” then commenced with elegant glasses served to each guest

Fueled on Affogatos, Great Wine, and Cocktails, everyone was ready to dance!

When NYC couples bring their signature style to a Shelter Island backyard wedding, the result is nothing short of spectacular. This celebration, held at a private estate, was a perfect blend of chic, modern “antibride” aesthetics and an intimate, multi-course dinner party under the stars. As an editorial wedding photographer, I live for weddings that break tradition and embrace personal flair—and this one delivered in every way.
Shelter Island Wedding photographer
Nestled off Long Island, Shelter Island offered the ideal backdrop for this couple’s wedding. With its understated luxury and serene coastal charm, it’s a world away from the hustle of New York City, yet close enough to feel like home. Their private estate provided a picturesque canvas for their unique celebration, featuring lush gardens, a dreamy tented reception space, and short walks to the water where the groom grew up wading and fishing.
The Antibride Aesthetic: Modern “Anti Bride” Style NYC Wedding with Documentary Photographer
This bride redefined what it means to be a modern bride. Forget traditional ballgowns—she wore a minimalist yet striking ensemble that perfectly captured her personality: a sleek slip dress with a black crane pattern. Her partner complemented her effortlessly in a sharp, modern suit with subtle textural details. Together, they radiated effortless Hamptons cool while still embracing the romance of the day.
A Ceremony with Heart
The couple chose to forgo the traditional altar and exchanged vows in a separate ceremony day at the bride’s family town in Italy. They planned this reception stateside to celebrate with all their friends and family.
A Dinner Party to Remember
The reception was designed to feel like the most elegant dinner party their guests had ever attended. Under a white sailcloth tent adorned with modern floral arrangements, long tables were set with minimalist tableware and flickering taper candles. The meal itself was a highlight: a thoughtfully curated multi-course dinner featuring local, seasonal ingredients paired with fine wines.
For dessert, the couple paired their traditional tiered cake with elegant passed affogato cups. Guests mingled, laughed, and toasted the couple late into the evening, with the soft glow of string lights adding a magical touch.
Dancing, but Make It Modern
While they kept the vibe sophisticated throughout, the couple didn’t skip the chance to let loose. Their band played an eclectic mix of indie hits and classic dance tracks, and the dance floor quickly became the place to be.
Why This Wedding Stands Out
This Shelter Island wedding was a masterclass in blending personal style with meaningful tradition. By embracing their modern “antibride” sensibilities, the couple created a wedding that felt undeniably them: stylish, intentional, and brimming with love. It was a day that celebrated not just their union but also the relationships and experiences that have shaped their journey together.
